Why Manglik dosha frightens families more than it should

Mars sits in one of six houses, a word is spoken, and a proposal collapses. In thirty-five years at Har Ki Pauri I have watched more marriages fail from the fear of this dosha than from the dosha itself.

The first thing worth saying is that Maṅgala dosha is not a verdict. It is an observation about where one planet sits, and like every observation in a birth chart it means nothing on its own. It has to be read against the rest.

What it actually is

Mars occupying the first, second, fourth, seventh, eighth or twelfth house from the ascendant is described as Maṅgala dosha. The reasoning is straightforward: Mars is a planet of heat and assertion, and those six houses touch the body, the family, domestic peace, the marriage itself, longevity and expenditure. A hot planet in a domestic house was traditionally read as friction.

The dosha describes a temperament, not a sentence. Temperaments can be matched.

The four cancellations

Classical texts are clear that the dosha is considered cancelled in several situations, and these are not obscure exceptions, they cover a large share of the charts I see.

  • Both charts carry it. Two Manglik charts are traditionally read as neutralising each other entirely. This alone resolves a great many cases.
  • Mars is in its own sign or exalted. In Meṣa, Vṛścika or Makara, Mars is at home and behaves very differently.
  • Mars is aspected by Guru. Jupiter's aspect moderates almost anything it touches.
  • Age. Several traditions hold that the effect weakens considerably after twenty-eight.
What I actually check

Before I say a word about Maṅgala dosha, I look at the seventh house of both charts, the lord of that house, and which daśā each person is running. A dosha in a strong chart is a footnote. A clean score in two weak charts is not a marriage.

Where the real harm happens

Families hear the word, panic, and reject a proposal that would have been perfectly sound. Or worse, they conceal it, and the discovery later poisons the trust between two households. Neither is necessary. The dosha is checkable in a few minutes and explainable in ten.

If someone has told you that a chart is Manglik, ask them which house Mars is in and whether any cancellation applies. If they cannot answer both, they have not looked properly.

Have it read properly

The premium matching reads both charts house by house, checks every cancellation, and tells you plainly whether the objection is real.
